When should you use professional print management companies?
A question that many businesses, organisations, and even designers ask themselves fairly regularly is: when can I print myself, and when should I use print management companies? It’s actually a very important question to ask, and the answer always depends on the situation. It really is a case-by-case decision, but there are a few things you can consider that can help you to make it.
What do you need to think about?
The first thing that you should really consider is whether or not you have the appropriate software to open and read the files for the actual print itself. This is much more important than you might think, as the files need to be properly prepared or the print will look low quality.
But what is involved in this step? Firstly, the file needs to be created in the correct colour mode – usually, this is the standard CYMK mode. A bleed should also be included, and guides to show the trim area and crop marks. Without taking these measures you could end up having to reprint, wasting valuable time and money. Something that nobody wants!
This, however, is just one of the steps required for a successful print. Next is what happens once the files have been fully prepared for printing and received by the printer itself. Once the first print has been made it is time to review it for consistency. This is where it can get really tricky, and somewhere that even those with lots of experience printing can come up against trouble.
In the majority of cases, the first print will need minor adjustments – perhaps with the colour, spacing, or you spot an error that needs amending. This stage requires an eagle eye, and the knowhow to make these amends on the relevant computer software. Once these corrections have been made, the finished file can be re-sent to the printer.
Choosing an experienced printing partner
Printing is a meticulous job, and it really does benefit inexperienced printers to employ the help of professional print management companies unless you feel totally comfortable completing each of these steps yourself. If these steps sound confusing to you, or you don’t have the correct software, it is better to let a printing specialist handle the process for you.
